Augusta: A first-hand view from 2nd Swing Golf (Part 2 of 2).

Some of our 2nd Swing Golf staff are at Augusta National Golf Club this week and have a few golf-insider jottings from the 2014 Masters:

  • Stood behind the par-3 Hole 4, and while they were playing more than 240 yards, we saw the PGA pros use anything from 3-irons to 3-woods.
  • Stopped by the PING Tour Van, and while we we were visiting, Lee Westwood’s 3-iron came in to gain another 1 or 2 yards (They took 0.5 degrees of loft off it.).

A classic club in use at the 2014 Masters.

  • 90 percent of the players we saw during the Wednesday practice round used a Bushnell rangefinder.
  • We were able to get into the Clubhouse with Mr. John Harris (University of Minnesota golf and hockey legend, U.S. Amateur Champion and professional Champions Tour member) and saw several players, members and former Masters champs.

  • Some of the VIPs that we saw on Wednesday and Thursday include Jerry Rice, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Caroline Wozniacki (pro tennis player and Rory McIlroy’s fiancee) and putting guru Dave Stockton.

  • Golf is alive and growing in the Midwest with 51-year-old amateur Mike McCoy, from Des Moines, Iowa, having close to 100 people following him during his round on Thursday.
