Big Bertha V Series Driver Review

Big Bertha V Series Driver Review

Big Bertha V Series Driver Review: $399.99 (Available 8/22/14)

Lightweight is part of the game, and the late-summer 2014 Big Bertha V Series Driver is the name for lightweight. Callaway’s latest offering is touting lightweight + forgiveness = more speed = more distance.

I got my hands on one today to hit her a bunch and see what she’s got.

“Some people have a hard time generating head speed… In this V Series, V for velocity, is designed for solving that (problem),” — Alan “Doc Hock” Hocknell, senior vice president of Callaway Golf R&D

For your information, I tested the 9-degree Big Bertha V Series Driver model with the Fujikura Motore Speeder 565 shaft.

Looks (9 out of 10 rating)

If you are reminiscing about the looks of Callaway drivers from yesteryear, this is the driver for you. The Big Bertha V Series Driver has an uncanny look to the original BB. I like the simple black finish look from address.

The Chevron logo for the alignment aid is simple yet effective once again. Meanwhile, the white finish of the speeder shaft pairs well with the dark crown. It shouldn’t matter, but I do like the new headcover. It’s far less conspicuous than the headcover for the Big Bertha Alpha Driver (which I reviewed in February, 2014).

Feel (7 out of 10 rating)

A good-feeling driver at such a light weight is always going to be tough to pull off. And for me it was tough to always know where the clubhead was at any time during my swing.

For me, it’s always the preference of feeling like your swinging 1,000 mph or the sensation of hitting something with a sledgehammer. You definitely feel like you are swinging fast, but , unfortunately, sometimes it does not feel like you are hitting it with power.

Performance (8 out of 10 rating)

This is an odd little driver. As stated above, I prefer something a little heavier that provides a thump at impact. I didn’t feel that thump, but some of the numbers (See image below.) were tough to ignore.

I will usually peak around 101 mph when fully getting after it. As you can see, I was loosing quite a bit to the right, which is not my norm.

However, I like the launch and spin rates I was getting out of the driver. I can see that if I got it out on the course, this would be plenty long.

Here are my 2nd Swing Golf state-of-art fittings‘ swing analysis results for the Big Bertha V Series Driver:

I’m not a huge fan of putting in made-for shafts, but I do understand if the 569 Speeder was in it the price tag would take quite the jump.

I’d also like to give kudos to Callaway for taking a ½ inch off of the stock length. It will help most of us keep it in the fairway (And most of us shouldn’t be afraid to take a little more length off of it.).

Check out Callaway‘s own little Internet talk show on it’s official product launch on the Big Bertha V Series Driver and rest of the entire line (This in-depth segment is great for you detail-orientated players.):

Final thoughts (Overall rating: 8 out of 10)

The Big Bertha V Series Driver will join an already crowded Callaway market, but it does offer us something the other lines don’t.

The lightweight build will help the golfer who has a slower swing speed pick some extra yardage, which in the long run is what most of us are looking for in our driver.
