Cleveland Smart Square Putter Review

Cleveland Smart Square Putter Review

Cleveland Smart Square Putter Review: $139.99

The Cleveland Smart Square Putter is aimed at all golfers looking to shave strokes off their games with a putter that provides confidence by its appearance and feel. The Cleveland Smart Square Putter is the alternative line to Cleveland’s Classic Collection

Technology (9 out of 10)

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that a comparable product is the Odyssey 2-Ball Putter, since it’s basically the same design — except Cleveland chose squares over Odyssey’s circles with the head shape. The price point is comparable to other mallet putters on the market as well as Odyssey 2-Ball Putter. Since Cleveland doesn’t have the same handle on the market as Odyssey, it will struggle unless it can offer something more affordable than Odyssey.

Cleveland also is promoting the “Copolymer face insert enhances feel and sound at impact.” It produces a softer impact with a level ball roll and greater distance control.

Looks (8 out of 10)

I really liked this putter. I liked the classic black finish with just the small white outlines of the squares for alignment.

I don’t know the science behind whether squares or circles provide better alignment, but I did really enjoy the ball set up provided by the squares. It could be because the change in shape made it easier to square the golf ball? I’ll leave that to the engineers, but from a players standpoint, the ability to get lined up to the target is a big bonus.

The grip on the putter also was very nice. It was a standard grip (typical size and no counterbalancing), but was kind of a hybrid between a standard putting grip with a classic shape, but was slightly thicker than a standard grip. The black grip combined with the black clubhead made for a classic and simple look as well.

Performance (9 out of 10)

The putter provided a nice solid sound and had a comfortable weight to it — not too heavy and not too light. It seemed to provide enough forgiveness on putts hit off the sweet spot on long putts and also had a confident alignment over the short ones.

Final Thoughts (Overall: 8.7 out of 10)

If you’re willing to purchase a putter that’s not as “mainstream” as Odyssey, PING or Titleist Scotty Cameron, this is a really nice option. I am always tinkering with my putter — grip, length, and, yes, even purchasing new ones.

Had I not had a wave of restraint when I was practicing with it, it would be in my bag now. That’s not to say it won’t be in there by June.
