So, what is a club fitting exactly?

So, what is a club fitting exactly?

What is a golf club fitting?

If you’re a golfer and you haven’t gone through a custom club fitting with your local pro, you are more than likely leaving some strokes out on the course each round.

No matter if you are a scratch golfer or a weekend warrior with a 25 handicap, every player should take advantage of this short and inexpensive process. You’ll be surprised what you find out about your game.

Incidentally, Golf Digest, PING and TaylorMade have all recently recognized 2nd Swing Golf as a club fitting leader. The company has award-winning fitters at its Minneapolis and Minnetonka, Minn., stores.

And if you aren’t anywhere near the Twin Cities metro (Why would you in February if you didn’t have to?) 2nd Swing Golf offers professional and uniquely customized online fitting.  Hit the link back there, then fill out the following online form here, and a real-life expert fitter will handle your needs ASAP.

Just like you shouldn’t buy a new top-notch suit without having it tailored, even a bit, you shouldn’t invest in a set of clubs right off the rack and out the door. They might look like the right size, but the fit is key, too.

And contrary to what you might think, your game is “good enough” for a club fitting.

So, what exactly are we talking about when we say club fitting anyway?

The club-fitting process actually begins long before a player walks in the door, said Woody Lashen, co-owner of Pete’s Golf Shop in Mineola, N.Y., which is rated one of America’s 100 Best Clubfitters by Golf Digest.

“What you see during a fitting is the tip of the iceberg of the fitting process,” Lashen said. “Long before you come in the store, every club head we sell has been independently tested. Understanding how every club works for different players is critical to fitting; same goes for shafts.”

The sessions include a combination of sensors, software, cameras, digital imaging and number-crunching to analyze a player’s swing, grip, club and even ball use with indoor hitting bays and state-of-the-art studios, such as Mizuno, Foresight, V1, PING’s nFlight, Bettinardi’s Studio B and TaylorMade’s new fitting systems.

While the steps may vary somewhat from shop to shop, a typical fitting starts with an interview that allows the fitting expert to learn how the player plays, how often, personal goals, history.

A baseline is created using the player’s existing clubs.

Measurements are then recorded for length, lie, grip size, shaft flex, shaft weight, shaft profile, swing path, angle of attack, dynamic loft, launch angle, spin rate and face-contact points.

“Once all of this has been established, we find the best combination for the player, then go back to their current clubs and compare,” Lashen said. “These steps are done for driver, fairways, hybrids, irons and wedges. If we can’t improve on what they are doing, we will not recommend making a change.”

And don’t forget about your putter. Lashen said getting the proper fit for your putter could be the most important step of all.

A fitting — which is free with purchase — at 2nd Swing Golf ranges depending on how involved it is, anywhere from $15 for a grip analysis to $250 for a complete bag with putting studio analysis. Like some other specialized golf retailers, the company also offers golf club consultations to make sure it’s a proper match between the player and his toys.

It can take about an hour for each club. Check with your local pro to schedule times and find rates in your area. Here’s 2nd Swing Golf’s information:
