On Tour: Q&A with Resurgent PGA Pro Charley Hoffman

On Tour: Q&A with Resurgent PGA Pro Charley Hoffman

Following up a top 20 finish at The Memorial earlier in June, yet another solid week in Connecticut at the Travelers Championship, and a tie for third at this week’s Quicken Loans National, Charley Hoffman finds himself approaching $2 million in earnings, already besting his total from all of last year, and projected to be sitting in 22nd place in the FedEx Cup Standings

Hoffman’s performance at the 2014 Travelers Championship, where our 2nd Swing writer caught up with the PGA vet.

I caught up with Hoffman for 2nd Swing Golf heading into this week’s 2014 PGA tourney at Congressional in Bethesda, Md., (which Justin Rose won in a playoff) to chat about his game, his foundation, skateboarding and Tiger’s return after a layoff due to back surgery.

Historically you have played very well at the Travelers, what is it about TPC River Highlands that suits your game?

CH: It’s visually a nice course for me, and I enjoy playing it.

PGA vet Charley Hoffman talks to 2nd Swing about his season, game, childhood and charities.

How are you feeling about your game right now?

CH: Everything feels good. It usually just depends on putting. If putts go in for birdie, it keeps the round going.

Talk about the Charley Hoffman Foundation and some of the cool things you’re up to.

CH: Stacy and I started the Charley Hoffman Foundation about five years ago to be able to give back to San Diego, our hometown, and our adopted town, Las Vegas. Plain and simple — we just want to help kids. We have associated with some excellent organizations that do that.

You made a nice jump in the FedEx Cup Standings with the T3 at Quicken Loans. How much do you pay attention to the standings during the season?

CH: You always sort of pay attention to where you stand, but I also realized how much things can move during the playoffs. You just want to put yourself in position to make a move during the playoffs. Moving into the top 30 is very important as it allows you to compete in all four majors.

Thoughts on Tiger’s return to competition this week?

CH: It’s great for the game of golf. It’s always great to have one of the best players in the world compete.

Discuss your wife Stacy’s important work with the PGA Tour Wives Association (PTWA).

CH: Stacy is passionate about helping others and sees the PGA Tour and PTWA as an excellent platform to do so. Of course, I get involved whenever she asks.

What is something very few people know about you?

CH: I used to love to skateboard. I would take the bus with my older brother to the beach to do so.

Did you always want to be a golfer?

CH: Yes. In fact, Stacy and I were just reading a report from when I was like in 6th grade about how I wanted to be a professional golfer. If I weren’t a professional golfer, I would probably be doing something related to golf.

Who is your favorite golfer of all time?

CH: Greg Norman. I think I looked up to him because at the time he was the best.

What needs to happen for you to consider this season a success?

CH: My goals are to win a golf tournament and to finish this season inside the top 30.

Sorry, Charley. But just for fun… Hoffman’s unique hairstyles have drawn comparisons for him to Dumb and Dumber star Jeff Daniels (with Bubba Watson, left, as Jim Carrey’s character) as well as Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights and Gary Busey in, well, everything.

The guy who once should have won an Oscar for playing Buddy Holly.

Hoffman as Hoffman.
