TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges Review

TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges Review

TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges Review

TaylorMade may have produced its best wedge ever with its 2014 Tour Preferred line of wedges. Players will have several options to improve their short game with five wedges between 50 and 60 degrees (50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60, to be precise) — and with several bounce options.

The new TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges rate as 10 out of 10 by 2nd Swing Golf's reviewer.

Technology (9 out of 10)

The Tour Preferred wedges feature TaylorMade’s most aggressive groove to date with a microtexture face that promotes additional spin. Furthermore, the new 2014 Tour Preferred Wedges are designed with a soft 304 stainless steel for exceptional feel around the green.

The classic design features a progressive camber and generous heel relief that allow players to open the face yet retain the main sole surface for enhanced performance. Regardless of the shot, the club sets up favorable at address.

Looks (10 out of 10)

The club visually looks so good that you will have confidence to attack the pin from anywhere around the green.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges easily pass the initial eyeball test. The simple design with a traditional clubhead shape rivals the best-looking wedges available. The thin sole is available with different grinds, which makes the club versatile to open the face up or set it square for any shot around the green.

The microtexture face (which provides extra ball grip and give with small bumps in addition to grooves at contact) is similar to the milled face on a putter.

Finally, the raw Tour Satin finish completes the outstanding look of the 2014 TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges. It also sets up great at address and has a perfect appearance.

Performance (10 out of 10)

I tested the 56-degree Tour Preferred Wedge with the stock KBS Tour-V shaft with standard Golf Pride Tour velvet grip. Overall, I felt the performance matches the outstanding appearance of the Tour Preferred TaylorMade Wedges.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges offer exceptional control around the green. It is easy to make the ball check quickly or land high and soft. The Tour Preferred Wedges feels really soft and smooth at impact due to microtexture face.

Finally, the sole rests so comfortable on the ground the club can slice under the ball from even the tightest lies for a quick check on the green. The Tour Preferred Wedge performs so well I could easily put the club in my bag. The evolution of the former TaylorMade ATV Wedges to Tour Preferred Wedges is amazing.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedges can be fit to almost any player's ability.

Final Thoughts

Nearly every TaylorMade Tour player is projected to play this new Tour Preferred Wedges line. So the rest of us searching for a new wedge should try a few swings with the these wedges. In fact, the club looks so good you might feel confident adding it to your bag without hitting any balls.

For years, the Titleist Vokey Wedges has been the benchmark in the golf industry, and TaylorMade just delivered a true competitor with its 2014 Tour Preferred Wedges. Combined with the exceptional performance and appearance of the Tour Preferred Wedges, I would have no problem putting them in my bag. I really enjoyed testing TaylorMade’s new addition and you can purchase a Tour Preferred Wedge up for around $130 per stick, the same price range as other top wedges, such as the Titleist Vokey Wedge.

The Tour Preferred Wedges is at least equal to or better than every other wedge I have played; and the club rates a perfect score.
