Ryder Cup Rain Suits – US Team – 2010
The 2010 Ryder Cup was a rough one for the US team. Not only did they have heartbreak in the last singles group and lose the Ryder Cup, they also had Rain Suit issues. With the Ryder Cup in Wales the weather forecast was cold and rainy, and it didn’t disappoint. On day one, the first groups were out in the pouring rain and rain suits were not preforming to the standards that Captain Corey Pavin expected. After play was stopped because the grounds were getting too wet, Pavin had some US personnel head over to the merchandise tent and buy all of the rain gear.
Two things happened because of this. One, the company that made the US team rain suits (Sun Mountain) was not happy and sent out some PR: ”Sun Mountain has been designing and selling outerwear for more than two decades. We have provided rainwear to 3,000 plus PGA of America Professionals and over 150 tour players, and supplied outerwear to numerous U.S. teams, including the Walker Cup and the 2000 and 2009 Presidents Cup teams. Sun Mountain has staff on the ground at the Ryder Cup working in conjunction with the PGA of America on this issue.”
Two, the rain suits that were available in the merchandise tent were produced by the manufacturer that made the suits for the European team. The Euros had a little fun with this, and even Rory Mcllroy Tweeted “Just have to say that our waterproofs are performing very well”
