Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons

Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons

Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons: $599.99 to $799.99

There once was a day when Wilson Staff dominated the golf industry. The best golfers of every decade, including Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Payne Stewart, all wielded Wilson Staff’s weaponry on their way to countless PGA Tour victories. With their documented success on Tour and a wide array of models from drivers to irons to putters, it seemed inevitable that someone in your foursome was rocking at least something from the great sports industry giant.

But then a new age of steel and forging came along, and Wilson Staff failed to adapt with the times. Other companies — such as TaylorMade and Nike — began using big dollars to saturate the market with their products and advertisements for them. Even PING and Titleist, clubmakers with a distinct place in history just like Wilson Staff, morphed with the new age and carved their own niches into the industry and remain relevant.

During that time, Wilson Staff fell behind the game quite seriously. Almost all of their credibility on the PGA Tour had evaporated, and just about everyone’s old Wilson Staff metal lay in garages collecting spider webs and dust.

In an effort to put the brand back on the map, Wilson Staff created a new set of irons aimed at the better player and even tour players, who just want pure feel, durability and that classic “W/S” badge logo engraving on the back. That’s where the Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons come in to play.

Technology (9 out of 10)

Released in 2012, Wilson Staff put a new product on the shelves that would garner back some of the buzz from their previously successful years. The Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons have a very classic look to them. On the ground, they feature a fairly thin top-line with minimal offset, just like you’d find in any traditional blade.

For a mid-handicapper, it may look a tad unforgiving but this is a new-age iron, featuring a cavity back despite its clean, classic looks.

Looks (9 out of 10)

The chrome finish on these bad boys made the irons pop out of your bag. The finish may deter some because chrome will certainly reflect sunlight much more, but the face does indeed have a matte finish, so at address, reflection shouldn’t be a big problem.

All in all, the looks of these are very clean and classic but they’re not dull either. Even with just the chrome finish and black and white engravings within the cavity, the style still takes a modern twist on an old, traditional look.

Performance (9 out of 10)

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons are pristine shot-makers. If you’re looking to dial in for short irons from 150 yards and in, then you’ll be lucky to have these irons in your bag.

The carbon-steel clubhead gives you a very soft feel at impact. It definitely feels like a blade when you hit it right but even on those shots you just miss-hit, you’re still going to gain some help from the designed forgiveness of the cavity back. When you pure your short irons, you’re going to hear and feel that “thud” of solid contact, something all better players desire. It’s not going to feel or sound “clicky” at all, a testament to Wilson Staff’s tried and trued durability.

The longer irons will take some getting used to. Just like any traditional blade, the longer irons will take a precise ball-striker to consistently get the ball air born with some gusto. Again, the cavity in these irons will help offset some of your mistakes but the margin for error on the longer irons is much larger than that of the short irons.

If you’re looking to seek out some pins, then the Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons are worth giving a try. They have everything that a better player demands out of their irons plus a little added forgiveness, which doesn’t hurt anybody. The looks are outstanding, as long as you enjoy the modern touch of chrome, while the sound and feel are just what you’d expect coming out of a forged steel face.

Final Thoughts (Overall: 9 out of 10)

But giving the Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Irons a try means more than just trying out a new set of irons. It means giving a jolt to your childhood years of holding Wilsons from back in the day. It means being a part of a new movement to garner an old friend some hope and faith in a market that’s as competitive as any other. It means carrying on tradition of not just your own but even some of the best players the world has ever seen that carried Wilson Staffs wherever they went.

Picking these irons up won’t just help you and your game, rather it will help one of the biggest names reclaim old heyday glory, even if it’s just for another moment.
