Rory McIlroy said he claimed his third Major by concentrating on a couple of key words all week.

For anyone watching the final round of this weekend’s 2014 Open Championship, the question was not so much whether Rory McIlroy would take home the Claret Jug, but by how many strokes would he leave the competition scrambling to make it competitive.

There were plenty of moments on Sunday when it seemed that McIlroy was the only golfer on the course that could get in his way. Bogeys on Holes 5 and 6 opened the door for a charging Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and, yes, even Jim Furyk was lurking around with a hard-fought round of 65. But, as Rory rolled in his par-putt on No. 18, the 2-stroke lead he’d built felt more like 10.

Regardless of what you might think of McIlroy’s handling of his personal and professional life over the past 18 months — breaking off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki, signing with Nike and changing equipment while at the top of his game — it’s clear that the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland has learned from those experiences.

2014 British Open champ Rory McIlroy recently broke off his engagement with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. And somehow this helped his game? Okay.

Throughout the weekend, McIlroy exuded an inner peace and serenity that never seemed to waver. In an interview earlier in this July 17-20, 2014 week, he hinted at two “trigger” words he was repeating to himself throughout the tournament. When asked what those words were, he coyly responded by saying he would share them on Sunday if his name were still atop the leaderboard.

In an interview after securing his third Major victory, McIlroy shared the words that had helped carry him through the week: “spot” and “process.” Not overly profound, but perhaps that’s a testament to McIlroy’s hard-earned wisdom and maturity.

Golf, like anything else in life, is a process. You pick your spot, you take your shot and you live with the result.

Three-quarters of the way toward a career Grand Slam, McIlroy looks poised to continue adding victories to his resume.  Now, more than after his previous two major victories, he seems ready to enjoy the moment.

Perhaps he’s already picked his next spot, but he knows that there’s no rush in getting there. It’s all part of a process.

Here’s a more detailed look at the reported WITB Rory McIlroy used for the 2014 British Open:
